The Living Guideline process: keeping the Autism Guideline up to date
The New Zealand Autism Guideline was originally published in April 2008. In 2009, the NZ Ministries of Health and Education established a ‘living guideline’ process. This process ensures that the guideline is regularly updated and refined to reflect new evidence and changing user needs. Updates within the living guideline process are required when the recommendations in the guideline are no longer valid in view of research evidence that has emerged since the guideline’s original literature searches were conducted. The mahi (work) is funded by the Ministry of Disabled People – Whaikaha.
The Living Guideline Group (LGG) are a small group of sectoral experts who review a comprehensive update of the evidence in order to develop new recommendations and "good practice points". Ex-officio members of the group include representatives from Whaikaha and INSIGHT Research. Members are listed here.
INSIGHT Research holds the contract to manage the living guideline process. Every year, INSIGHT Researcher Marita Broadstock produces a systematic review which updates the research evidence on a topic prioritised by the Living Guideline Group. Each supplementary paper includes the systematic review, as well as the recommendations and good practice points developed and graded for quality by the Living Guideline Group. Completed updates are produced as separate supplementary papers to the guideline. The first seven updates have been incorporated into the Guideline's 2nd edition, published in 2016. An article the Altogether Autism Journal which describes the work is available here.
The third edition was published in November 2022. It is called 'Aotearoa New Zealand Autism Guideline: He Waka Huia Takiwātanga Rau'.
